I bought my WiiU before Mario Kart 8 came out,May 29, 2014, and set upwards my NNID when I got my WiiU as well.

I don't think it was ever free in the U.S. I'yard pretty sure it was Europe and other regions only. I gear up upwardly my NNID on launch 24-hour interval for the 3ds and Wii u and I had to pay. Information technology's merely like 7 bucks dude. Way cheaper than buying a mod chip for a panel dorsum in the day
